UNOFFICIAL MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION, USD 289
 A meeting of the Board of Education was held on Monday, February 27, 2017, at 6:30 PM in the board meeting room. President Beth Watson called the meeting to order.  Other board members present were Juanita Peckham, Kevin Jones, Clyde Coons, Dawn Whalen, Terry Messenger, and Ron Bloss.  Jerry Henn, Supt., Josh Adams, HS Prin., Brad Burkdoll, HS/MS AD, Randy Fox, MS Prin., Jason Townsend, ES Prin., and Sherry Bousman, Clerk, were also present.
 
2. ADOPT THE AGENDA Juanita Peckman moved, Kevin Jones seconded and motion carried 7-0 to adopt the agenda
 
3. PUBLIC COMMENT None
 
4.  STUDENT PRESENTATION Mr. Fox and students presented on Career Cruising, students enjoyed taking the test and were actively engaged in conversation with Mr. Fox afterwards
 
5. APPROVE CONSENT AGENDA Dawn Whalen moved, Clyde Coons seconded and motion carried 7-0 to adopt the consent agenda
 
5.C. DONATIONS American Legion to Life Skills $125, HS Activity Fund
Amanda and Brett Lyman donated a Robot Kit to WES

7.B. COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS Dawn Whalen moved, Kevin Jones seconded and motion carried 7-0 to move forward offering college courses to Juniors and Seniors at Peaslee Tech, Neosho, and Allen County Community Colleges
 
7.C. 18-19 CALENDAR Dawn Whalen moved, Terry Messenger seconded and motion carried 5-2 Yay Kevin Jones, Beth Watson, Dawn Whalen, Terry Messenger, and Ron Bloss - Nay Juanita Peckham and Clyde Coons to accept the 18-19 Calendar
 
7.D. CUSTODIAL SERVICES Kevin Jones moved, Dawn Whalen seconded and motion carried 7-0 to approve the contract with Nissen Services
 
7.E. SURVEYS Supt. Henn, Beth Watson, and Dawn Whalen will have further discussion on this topic and it will be revisited in April
 
7.F. BOARD TRAINING KASB Board Training will be held at election time in February 2018 after board meeting in January 2018
 
7.G. TRACK BIDS Ron Bloss moved, Juanita Peckham seconded and motion carried 7-0 to accept the Fisher Track Bid of $391,350 to replace the High School Track

PERSONNEL Dawn Whalen moved, Terry Messenger seconded and motion carried 7-0 to recess into executive session  to discuss personnel  in order to protect the privacy interest of the individual(s) to be discussed, with Jerry Henn, Supt. and Susan McCarty, HR  for 45 mins starting at 8:30pm and to return into open session in this room at 9:15pm

NEGOTIATIONS Dawn Whalen moved, Ron Bloss seconded and motion carried 7-0 to recess into executive session  to discuss personnel  in order to protect the public interest in negotiating a fair and equitable contract, with Jerry Henn, Supt. 10mins starting at 9:30pm and to return into open session in this room at 9:40pm

9.A. RESIGNATIONS Kevin Jones moved, Juanita Peckham seconded and motion carried 7-0 to accept the resignations from Don Currier WMS math teacher at the end of the school year, and Mary Edwards, transportation effective 2/16/17
 
9.B. CONTRACTS TO OFFER Kevin Jones moved, Dawn Whalen seconded and motion carried 7-0 to accept the contract offer to Barry Richards, HS Baseball, Jason Spradling, HS Assistant Football Coach, J. Lee Taylor, Kitchen. Dawn Whalen moved, Kevin Jones seconded and motion carried 7-0 to extend contracts for 18-19 school year to Jerry Henn, Josh Adams, Brad Burkdoll, and Jason Townsend.
 
11. ADJOURNMENT Dawn Whalen moved, Terry Messenger seconded and motion carried 7-0 to adjourn the meeting.  The meeting was adjourned 9:54pm.
